Gov. Jerry Brown has signed AB 1906 and SB 327, which are complementary bills designed to regulate the Internet of Things (IoT).
The bills would apply to “any device, or other physical object that is capable of connecting to the Internet, directly or indirectly, and that is assigned an IP or Bluetooth address. Such devices include TVs, fitness trackers, refrigerators, automobiles, security cameras and voice-activated devices like the Amazon Echo and Google Home.
The bills mandate that the manufacturer of these devices implement “reasonable” security features to protect the devices from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification or disclosure. They also require that each connected device be password-protected.
